Appropriately called IFTHEN clauses, this feature can be used in a wide variety of situations and often makes it possible to replace multiple passes over the data with a single pass over the data. Future articles will discuss additional features for manipulating data in various ways, including how to parse variable fields such as comma-separated values and delimited fields into fixed fields. The three types of records header, detail, and trailer also have different record layouts. The header record has a date in positions 21 through 28 that we want to overlay with the date of the run. We want to sort on the bird names, but keep the header as the first record and the trailer as the last record. Figure 1 shows the DFSORT control statements we need to sort the records correctly and to update the date in the header record.

All other parameters are ignored. You can specify a list of names separated by blanks. For example, a generic data set name of ABC. It prints a complete data set or part of a data set in character format, hexadecimal format or both formats. Printing starts at the record with the same primary key, or the record with the nearest higher key if an exact match does not occur.
Alternate indices are not used. Printing ends at the record with the same primary key, the record with the nearest higher key if an exact match does not occur, or end of file. Unprintable characters are printed as periods. HEX Records are to be printed in hexadecimal format. You must specify one of them. If you specify neither, printing starts at the first physical record. If you specify neither, printing ends at end of file.
DUMP is the default. The data sets can have either VSAM or sequential organization. Copy a VSAM data set to a sequential data set. Copy a sequential data set to a sequential data set. Copying starts at the record with the same primary key, or the record with the nearest higher key if an exact match does not occur. Copying ends at the record with the same primary key, the record with the nearest higher key if an exact match does not occur, or end of file.
MFJAMS automatically adds alternate key entries to the output data set if they have been previously defined. Note: In both cases, the highest valid value is The data set is assumed to be readable if it can be opened without error or if it is locked to another process. If the index is found to be unusable, the VERIFY command rebuilds the index by creating a new index file for the primary key and all alternate keys.
The data portion of the data set is not changed.
