IN A GROVE AKUTAGAWA PDF

Tojabei A lie works as a mechanism of self-preservation for most people. I first did not like this short story, and gave it two stars, mainly because, as they are by definition, short stories are short and I wanted to keep on reading and aktagawa left hungry for more. And, as you see, he got a bow and arrows somewhere. Her daughter is a beautiful, strong-willed year-old named Masago, married to Kanazawa no Takehiro—a year-old samurai from Wakasa.

The first section of the story comprises four testimonies given to a magistrate, a Kyoto city official who is investigating the mysterious death. The woodcutter who found the body that morning speaks first, confirming the location of the deserted bamboo grove where he found the corpse and describing the dry chest wound in detail. Next, a traveling Buddhist priest says he saw a man, a woman, and a horse the day before just after noon.

To his surprise, she asked him to kill either himself or her husband, saying she would be with the one who lived. The next account comes from Masago herself, delivered as a confession in the Kiyomizu Temple. When she awoke, the bandit was gone; she concluded that she and her husband needed to die, now that her honor had been disgraced.

She tried to stab herself in the neck and throw herself into a pond but ultimately failed to commit suicide. After her rape and her failed attempt to commit joint suicide, Masago asks the religious authority to whom she speaks what she should do. While Takehiro hesitated to answer the bandit, Masago escaped into the grove. He slowly bled as he watched the sun set over the grove; in the dark, an unidentified character walked up to him and withdrew the knife.

The story ends with Takehiro saying he then sank into the darkness between lives. With no unifying narrative presence to clarify the contradictory events presented in the testimonies, the reader is left without a clear idea of how Takehiro died, only possibilities.

As in any detective story, we learn the events from the head and tail instead of in linear fashion. He says the man died of a single sword stroke to the chest, and that the trampled leaves around the body showed there had been a violent struggle. There were no swords nearby, and not enough room for a horse—only a single piece of rope, a comb and bloodstained bamboo blades. A traveling Buddhist priest delivers the next account. He says that he saw the man, who was accompanied by his wife on horseback, on the road, around noon the day before the murder. The man was carrying a sword, a bow and a black quiver.

Then, in considering what makes the author stand out so much, Murakami cites in particular the excellence of his style and the sheer quality of his use of Japanese. Akutagawa was a born short-story writer who produced a great many works, some more successful than others. Akutagawa lived in an age that was similar to today, during which there was an economic downturn and natural disasters, including major earthquakes and tsunamis, happened. He also wrote about God and the Devil. He set others, though — often displaying a confessional tone — in the early decades of the 20th century when he was writing. In the story, I stays in a hotel in Tokyo to write stories, and walks a lot around the city center as he is suffering from insomnia and gradually losing his grip on reality and breaking down.
