The novel starts in early , with General Sir John Armstrong returning from Canada to England after a five-year absence. Jack is not eager to get home, as once there he must deal with the wife he has only known for a week.

Elizabeth is horrified at the idea of marrying a virtual stranger so soon after losing her beloved husband, but her prospects otherwise are dire, and Jack feels bound to his word. In addition needs a manager to look after his estate and care for his mother, who suffers from dementia, while he returns to Canada. So they marry, but hardly get to know each other before Jack leaves. In the second part, Jack arrives in Yorkshire, and Elizabeth and he must deal with their relationship.

In the third part, the outside world makes claims on them history buffs among you will probably guess in which manner , and any understanding they have reached so far is tested. I liked the way that the characters were grounded. Jack is an army man first and foremost, and the worry that he may never see action again he was promoted on a battlefield, but was an invalid for a long time after that dominates his thoughts to a great amount.

Elizabeth is the daughter of a failed banker who committed suicide, and accordingly her social position and her self-confidence are damaged. Both enter the marriage for sensible reasons, but find it very difficult at times to deal with the emotional impact. And when they make mistakes, these are not without consequences. For the first two thirds, the novel is almost wholly character-driven. Both protagonists are flawed people — nothing particularly villainous, but they go wrong in little but damaging ways, and must live with the results.

Consider the period! In the last third of the book, much of what happens is suddenly driven by outside events, and while this is historically convincing, the emotional depth was no longer quite as pronounced as before. Still, I liked the setting in this part very much indeed, and I also enjoyed the minor characters that play a larger role in that part.

[Reading] ➷ An Infamous Marriage By Susanna Fraser – Bandrider.co.uk

The characterisation in the novel is excellent. Jack and Elizabeth come across as real people with real flaws, and their marriage, while eventually very happy, has its ups and downs, and they regularly tease each other about their annoying habits. Jack is a soldier through-and-through, having joined the army at sixteen and spent most of his life away from England in the US and mostly, Canada. The historical detail is well-researched in the sections which describe some of the actions in which he was involved, and I especially like the way that the author shows us exactly what it means — to Jack — to be a military man. I have to point out here that Jack is unfaithful to Elizabeth in the early days of their hasty marriage. But there is one more crisis to be faced when on the eve of the battle Elizabeth receives some information that could separate her and Jack forever.

An Infamous Marriage

We ve established we don t wish each other dead I suppose it s a beginning. Two things I knew for sure at the beginning of my reading journey 1 Susanna Fraser is a writer who can pen a fabulous character driven story, and 2 The main conflict of this particular story is the hero s infidelity always a risky subject in romance. Fast forward three years Jack, General Jack Armstrong now, is coming home He s not looking forward to meeting this dull, cold mouse of creature also known as his wife With any luck she d bear a son on the first attempt and they could go back to avoiding each other. Elizabeth Armstrong doesn t know the first thing about war The one fought with guns and swords, at least When it comes to the battle of wills she is most definitely an experienced contender, to John s grief And she has a lot to be angry about First she loses her beloved husband to an illness, then she has to marry a man she doesn t know and THEN he has the gall to go off to war and behave scandalously Really, if he couldn t or wouldn t stay faithful he could at least have been discreet This way, she became an object of pity and gossip everywhere she went One thing s for sure John s homecoming might not be exactly as he expected it to be.
